These watercolours are made in small batches in South Wales, and the pigment load is immediately noticeable — the tubes are heavier than most. Michael Harding built his reputation on oil paints formulated without fillers or extenders, and the same principle carries through to every colour in this watercolour range. Unlike most watercolour manufacturers who use gum arabic alone as the binder, Michael Harding adds honey to every colour in the range. It's an old technique — Victorian watercolourists prized it — and it's the reason these colours stay workable in the palette for weeks rather than setting rock hard overnight. This is a 15ml tube of professional-grade artists' watercolour. The range runs to 136 colours, 92 of which are single-pigment shades — important if you care about clean colour mixing and predictable results. Pigment concentration is unusually high: you'll use noticeably less paint than with student or mid-range watercolours to achieve the same depth of colour. Lightfastness ratings are strong across the range, with the exception of Opera Rose (W220), which is fugitive by nature of its pigment — this is standard across all brands using that pigment family. Suited to watercolour on paper, vellum, and prepared surfaces. The honey binder means dried paint reactivates easily with water, so palette colours remain usable between sessions — particularly useful for plein air work. Not suitable for use as a gouache substitute without a dedicated white; the transparency of most shades means they will not fully opacify. For the cadmium colours (Series 4) and the rare mineral pigments (Series 5), handle with standard studio precautions.
