MichelleProduction & HeritageChateau Ste. Michelle, Washington State's founding winery established in 1934, produces the Domaine Ste. Michelle sparkling line using méthode champenoise — the same labor-intensive traditional method used in Champagne, where secondary fermentation occurs inside each individual bottle. The cuvée blends 63% Chardonnay, 19% Pinot Noir, and 18% Pinot Gris, all sourced from Columbia Valley vineyards that sit at a northerly latitude comparable to France's Champagne district, granting roughly two additional hours of sunlight during peak growing season. The "Extra Dry" designation reflects a residual sugar level of approximately 2.18 grams per 100ml — noticeably softer and slightly sweeter than a Brut but far from overtly sweet, placing it in the classic Extra Dry range that bridges dry and off-dry styles.Tasting NotesAroma: Delicate orange and lemon zest open the nose, followed by ripe pear and a subtle undercurrent of peach cobbler. There is a faint floral lift that keeps the aromatics fresh and inviting.Taste: The entry is soft and rounded, with apple and pear flavors arriving immediately on the palate. At mid-palate, guava and kiwi notes emerge alongside a gentle creaminess, while a thread of lemon curd adds brightness. The mousse is persistent and fine-beaded, giving the wine a polished texture without aggressive effervescence.Finish: Medium in length with a saline edge and lingering citrus. A clean, slightly sweet pear note trails off, leaving the palate refreshed rather than coated. How to Drink Ste. Michelle Extra DryServe well-chilled between 40–45°F in a flute or tulip glass to preserve the fine bead and concentrate the citrus-pear aromatics. This sparkling wine's gentle sweetness and balanced acidity also make it a versatile cocktail component. A Bellini works naturally here, as the pear and peach notes mirror the classic peach purée base. A French 75 gains a rounder, more fruit-forward profile compared to using a bone-dry Brut. And a simple Kir Royale made with crème de cassis plays beautifully against the wine's tropical-citrus backbone.Best For Hosting brunch where a crowd-pleasing, food-friendly sparkler is needed Gifting someone who prefers softer, fruit-forward sparkling wines over austere Brut styles Toasting milestones and celebrations without committing to Champagne pricing Building a mimosa or Bellini bar for a gathering Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Ste. Michelle Extra Dry taste like? It leads with ripe pear and apple flavors supported by tropical hints of guava and kiwi, finishing with lemon curd and a touch of salinity. The overall impression is soft, lightly sweet, and creamy with persistent fine bubbles. How does Ste. Michelle Extra Dry compare to Domaine Ste. Michelle Brut? The Extra Dry carries roughly twice the residual sugar of the Brut, resulting in a noticeably softer, more fruit-forward palate versus the Brut's leaner, crisper profile. Both use méthode champenoise and the same Columbia Valley fruit, so the structural quality is comparable — the difference is purely in sweetness level and flavor emphasis. Is Ste. Michelle Extra Dry good for cocktails? Yes — its gentle sweetness, balanced acidity, and persistent mousse make it an excellent base for Bellinis, French 75s, and mimosas. The slight residual sugar helps round out cocktails without needing additional simple syrup.Where is Ste. Michelle Extra Dry made? It is produced by Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington State, using grapes sourced from the Columbia Valley AVA — a large, warm-climate appellation in eastern Washington known for high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. What foods pair well with Ste. Michelle Extra Dry? Smoked salmon or lox, where the wine's acidity and salinity complement the richness of the fish. Fresh fruit tarts, especially pear or stone fruit, echo the wine's core flavors. Soft cheeses like Brie or triple-crème match its creamy texture. Shrimp cocktail benefits from the bright citrus notes. Light Thai or Vietnamese dishes with sweet-sour profiles harmonize with the wine's gentle sweetness. What sizes does Ste. Michelle Extra Dry come in? The standard offering is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format. Is Ste. Michelle Extra Dry worth the price? Domaine Ste. Michelle Extra Dry positions firmly in the entry-level sparkling wine tier, yet it delivers méthode champenoise quality and an 88-point Wine Enthusiast score — a combination that is uncommon at this price point. For a traditional-method domestic sparkling wine, it represents strong value. Why Ste. Michelle Extra Dry?The central differentiator here is method: méthode champenoise production at a price point where most competitors rely on the faster, less nuanced Charmat (tank) method. That traditional bottle fermentation delivers the fine, persistent bead and creamy mouthfeel that separate this wine from mass-produced sparkling alternatives. An 88-point rating from Wine Enthusiast and 86 points from Wine Spectator confirm that critics recognize the quality punch above its weight class. For anyone seeking a reliable, fruit-driven American sparkling wine with genuine traditional-method character, this Columbia Valley cuvée consistently delivers.
