Harvested blue agave is slow-roasted in traditional clay ovens constructed from the region's volcanic-rich soil, a step that preserves the plant's natural sweetness before fermentation. The spirit is triple distilled for smoothness, then aged between 14 and 24 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels — a dual-barrel maturation process that distinguishes it from the majority of añejos, which rely on a single barrel type. The American oak contributes caramel and vanilla sweetness, while the French oak adds structure, tannin complexity, and subtle spice.Tasting NotesAroma: Warm vanilla and butterscotch greet the nose first, followed by buttery oak and a resinous depth. Subtle vegetal undertones — green pepper and green olive — linger beneath the sweetness, a reminder of the agave's origin.Taste: The entry is creamy and rich, led by caramel and light honey. At mid-palate, layers of unsweetened chocolate and tobacco leaf emerge alongside toasted oak. Dried fruit and a succulent creaminess round out the peak, giving the palate a velvety, full-bodied quality without excessive sweetness.Finish: The finish is dry and medium-long, with lingering oak tannins and a faint echo of butterscotch. A restrained bitterness from the French oak keeps it balanced and invites the next sip.How to Drink Milagro Select Barrel ReserveThis añejo is best appreciated neat or with a single large ice cube to gently open the oak and chocolate notes. It also performs well in spirit-forward cocktails where its dual-oak complexity can shine. An Añejo Old Fashioned pairs the caramel and tobacco qualities with orange and bitters for a seamless riff on the classic. A Tequila Manhattan lets the French oak tannins complement sweet vermouth without being overwhelmed. A Oaxacan Old Fashioned (split base with mezcal) highlights the agave character while the smokiness plays off the butterscotch and chocolate notes.Best For Gifting a tequila enthusiast who appreciates barrel-aged expressions After-dinner sipping alongside dark chocolate or a cigar Introducing bourbon drinkers to premium añejo tequila Building a spirit-forward tequila cocktail menu at home Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Milagro Select Barrel Reserve Añejo taste like? The agave is roasted in clay ovens made from the area's volcanic soil before being triple distilled and barrel-aged on site. What foods pair well with Milagro Select Barrel Reserve? Dark chocolate truffles complement the unsweetened chocolate and vanilla notes. Grilled lamb chops echo the smoky oak character. Aged Manchego cheese mirrors the butterscotch and caramel sweetness. It positions as a premium añejo that punches above many bottles in its price tier, thanks to the uncommon dual-barrel aging and triple distillation. Multiple Gold medals at international competitions — including IWSC and TAG Global Spirits Awards — support its value as a serious sipping tequila. Why Milagro Select Barrel Reserve? The dual-barrel maturation in both American and French oak is the defining feature here — a production choice most añejo producers simply do not make, and one that yields measurable complexity in the glass. Triple distillation smooths the spirit before it ever enters wood, allowing the barrel influence to layer rather than dominate. With Gold medals at the 2023 IWSC, the 2023 TAG Global Spirits Awards, and the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the critical endorsement is consistent across years and judging panels. For drinkers who find many añejos too sweet or one-dimensional, this expression's dry finish and structured tannins offer a compelling alternative.
