Milk thistle is native to Europe, specifically the Mediterranean region, and has been introduced and naturalised in America, Africa, Australia, and Asia. Milk thistle is an annual or biennial plant that has a prickly flower head, purple flowers, and milky white veins. It has historically been used as an edible plant for various health benefits, with the use of it dating back to the 1st century AD. The main active component of milk thistle is silymarin and is extracted from the ripe seeds of milk thistle. Silymarin is a C25 composed of compounds called flavonolignans, including silibin A, silibin B, taxifolin, isosilibin A, isosilibin B, silichristin A, and silidiani.
