A Real Desktop CNC Mill Milo is not a lightweight engraver pretending to be a milling machine. The Milo platform was developed as an accessible, open-source desktop CNC capable of cutting aluminum while also performing well with plastics, composites, wood, and similar machinable materials. With the right tooling, feeds, speeds, setup, and expectations, Milo 2.0 can even work with steel—although steel is where planning your cuts becomes especially important. What’s New with Milo 2.0? Milo V2 is more than a minor revision. The machine has been reworked with meaningful improvements to rigidity, serviceability, setup, and builder flexibility. Larger Working Area Milo 2.0 provides a larger usable machining area than the previous generation, giving you more room for fixtures, vises, and larger workpieces without turning the machine into a full-size industrial mill. Redesigned Plates and HOIs The structural plates and **Hearts of Iron—HOIs, because every good open-source machine needs at least a few acronyms—**have been redesigned for the V2 platform. The updated system is intended to provide a more refined and rigid machine structure while making construction and adjustment more straightforward. Easier Tramming Proper tramming is essential for achieving flat surfaces, accurate features, and consistent cutting results. Milo 2.0 simplifies the tramming process, making it easier to bring the spindle and machine axes into proper alignment. You will still need to measure and adjust things. It is a CNC mill, not a toaster. But the machine is designed to make the process less painful. Magnetic Way Covers Milo 2.0 uses magnetic way covers that help protect the machine’s motion components from chips and debris while remaining easy to remove for cleaning, inspection, and maintenance. That is particularly helpful when machining aluminum, which has an impressive ability to distribute tiny chips into every corner of your workspace. Flexible Motion-System Options The Milo 2.0 platform supports both leadscrew and ballscrew configurations, allowing builders to choose a motion system based on their performance goals, budget, and preferred build configuration. This kit comes with leadscrews. New self-adjusting anti-backlash nut designs are also intended to help maintain accuracy over time on compatible leadscrew configurations. Moving-Table X-Axis Milo V2 uses a moving-table X-axis configuration. Builders interested in a stationary-table arrangement can build the Miley V2, the necessary hardware is included in the Milo V2 kit. All you need to do is print different X axis parts! Built Around the Open-Source Millennium Machines Ecosystem Milo 2.0 is an open-source machine, giving builders access to community-developed documentation, printed parts, machine files, modifications, firmware resources, and ongoing improvements. Wiring Your Milo or Casa Enclosure Need a cleaner way to connect your Milo to its electronics box or Casa enclosure? West3D offers the Milo Salon de la Casa Breakout Board and Wiring Kit as an optional wiring solution. The Salon de la Casa kit includes a breakout board and 15 individually labeled, crimped, and loomed 2.5-meter wiring harnesses with 125mm fanouts. The included harness is terminated for the BTT Scylla controller but can be reconfigured for other control systems. Salon provides a convenient disconnect point between the machine and electronics enclosure. That means the Milo can be disconnected or removed without pulling every individual wire back through the enclosure—a feature you will appreciate the first time you need to move, service, or upgrade the machine. Assembly requires mechanical aptitude, printed-part preparation where applicable, electrical wiring, firmware configuration, machine alignment, spindle setup, and an understanding of basic CNC operation. Builders should be comfortable working with mains-powered electronics or arrange for qualified assistance with VFD and spindle wiring. CNC machines use sharp tools, high-speed spindles, powerful motors, and mains voltage. Always install appropriate grounding, shielding, strain relief, emergency-stop controls, machine guarding, and dust or chip containment. Confirm all wiring and safety systems before operating the machine.
