Once you've completed the building, soak the bricks in water, dry them out, and try building something! While the packaging states 5 yrs+, our view is that the sets are better suitable for 8 yrs+ because of the care and detail required to get the greatest benefit. It's best to create one or two layers per sitting, or a small area, rather than trying to build it all at once! While the glue is wet, the blocks are prone to move, so go slow and enjoy the experience.
