The best way to clean a stencil depends on what type of paint you are using. Water based paints such as acrylics can be wiped off frequently with a paper towel and can be more thoroughly cleaned with warm soapy water. You can soak a stencil that has stubborn acrylic build up on it and you will see the paint start to break down after a few minutes. Oil based paints and inks used on a stencil need to be removed with alcohol, paint thinner or any non-acid chemical recommended by the paint manufacture.
