Meehan's Mint (Meehania cordata) Meehan's Mint, or Meehania cordata, is a low-growing native perennial prized for its attractive mint-like foliage and charming lavender-blue, tubular flowers. Blooming in late spring, it thrives in shady, moist areas, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, and ground cover. Despite its common name, Meehan's Mint is not a true mint but is related, and it spreads gently without crowing out other plants. It supports pollinators like bees and provides excellent ground cover under trees or in woodland settings. Key Characteristics: Attractive ground cover: Meehan's Mint forms a lush mat of green foliage, perfect for covering bare spots in shady areas. It's ideal for use in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and even as an understory layer. Pollinator-friendly: The delicate lavender-blue flowers bloom from May to June and attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in shaded landscapes. Non-aggresive spread: Unlike true mints, Meehan's Mint spreads gently without becoming overly aggressive, making it easy to manage in gardens and landscapes. Thrives in shade: Meehan's Mint excels in full to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, making it a valuable addition to shady, moist areas where other plants may struggle. Low-maintenance: This hardy perennial requires little care once established and is resistant to deer and rabbits, making it a great choice for naturalistic plantings or permaculture designs.
