Mirror is Charlotte's self portrait, built from her own photographs: her face, the French Alps she grew up in, and a painted angel. Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. Almost nothing here looks photographed. The surface is closer to a painted wall, and the one sharp eye, dark lashes and a pale iris, is what tells you it is not. That wall is the angel's. Charlotte photographed it on old plaster, and it is the plaster that carries across her face. A face can look smooth and still have breaks underneath. Here they are on the outside. The angel is there for protection, for having been watched over, for being born under a lucky star, and the same photograph gives her both things. The mountain is the dark. Its rock falls over her nose and under her eye. The Alps are not behind her, they are in the skin. Blue off the angel's wall settles where her head is, over the part that does the thinking. Snow sits next to it, white and empty, somewhere to rest. The fir trees arrive low and go into her hair. They are the living thing in a landscape that is otherwise rock and snow. The face is right there. So is everything else.
