Mitrophyllum grande is a member of the family Mesembryanthemum with particularly pleasing proportions, both while growing and during dormancy, when its oblong body is tightly encased in a light grey papery sheathe, giving the plant a very egg-like silhouette. It is probably one of the slower-growing members in this genus of shapely plants, making it an appealing option to collectors of lesser-common Conophytum and other South African rarities. It's no surprise many mesemb growers deep in the weeds have a specific fondness for Mitrophyllum, especially those with an appreciation for amusing plants. From the more northerly parts of Namaqualand bordering with Namibia where they recieve sparse winter rainfall and has an obligate summer dormancy in cultivation as well.
