We see it everyday in most of our own circles, today’s youth, and maybe even ourselves. I’m shocked at the number of my friends who take opioids, stimulants, and sedatives in order to simply function throughout the day. I also empathize with the fact that people need them to get through an unprecedented time in our history. I consider the role technology plays in this pharmaceutical heyday, and is it by design? Scrolling through our phones sets off our dopamine receptors and can deplete them, which is not something our brains have evolved enough to handle, hence the need for prescription drugs. I find myself constantly saying this hollow phrase “It’s fine I’m fine” in order to self soothe during the daily chaos that surrounds me. I hope I can continue to pacify and find balance, but I fear those days are few and far between."
