Flight of the Rays was inspired by the phenomenal occurrence of the mass migration of Mobula Rays. I hope that one day I will be able to witness this amazing event with my own eyes someday: thousands of Mobula Rays moving together through the sea—gliding, flipping, even leaping into the air like birds taking flight. It’s one of nature’s great mysteries, a migration that feels more like a dream than something real.Mobula Rays are still largely a mystery to us. They're incredibly social and often seen in massive groups, called fevers. This piece is a reminder of how much there is to love—and protect—in our oceans. They’re often caught by accident in large-scale fishing operations or hunted for their gill plates, which are used in traditional medicine. What makes it even harder—they reproduce slowly, sometimes only having one baby at a time. That means once their numbers drop, it takes a long time for them to bounce back. Several species are already considered endangered. Protecting them isn’t just about saving one animal—it’s about protecting the rhythm and balance of the entire ocean.
