The Modal COBALT8 is an advanced 8-voice extended virtual-analogue synthesiser featuring 64 high-resolution oscillators, a premium 37-note FATAR keybed with aftertouch, 40 complex oscillator algorithms, over 30 filter types, a 512-note real-time sequencer, MPE support, a comprehensive modulation matrix, and MODALapp software integration. Extended Virtual-Analogue Synthesis COBALT8 reimagines analogue-style synthesis with a next-generation digital engine that offers the warmth and character of vintage instruments while vastly expanding sonic potential. Its dual independent oscillator groups house up to four oscillators each, delivering a total of 64 virtual-analogue oscillators across 8 true polyphonic voices. Musicians can access 40 distinctive algorithms including waveform morphing, sync, ring modulation, filtered noise, bit crushing, and crossmodulation to create textures far beyond traditional analogue capabilities. Extended Oscillator Drift emulates the nuanced inconsistencies of classic analogue synthesisers, contributing further to the organic character of the sound. Innovative Filter Architecture The filter section offers a diverse suite of 31 filter types, combining static and morphable designs to enhance sonic sculpting. Modal's 2-pole state variable and 4-pole ladder filters allow for dynamic tonal shaping, with variations of lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and notch characteristics. Drive options on select filter types enhance harmonic content, while morphing capabilities support evolving textures that extend the instrument’s versatility into experimental territory. Advanced Modulation Control COBALT8 includes three audio-rate LFOs—two polyphonic and one global—with seven waveforms and tempo synchronisation. These LFOs integrate with a 12-slot modulation matrix that supports eight user-assignable routings and four fixed assignments, offering modulation paths to 55 destinations from 12 sources. Three dedicated envelope generators for amp, filter and modulation tasks—each with switchable envelope types and reverse polarity options—give users comprehensive control over dynamics and movement within patches. Comprehensive Sequencing and Arpeggiation COBALT8’s onboard sequencer supports both real-time and step-based recording with up to 512 notes and four independent animation lanes, enabling parameter automation with high granularity. A 64-step polyphonic step sequencer mode allows up to eight notes per step with deep animation options. The 32-step programmable arpeggiator offers multiple playback and gate modes, rests, and up to 2048 step chaining before looping, allowing intricate rhythmic and melodic developments. Performance-Focused Hardware Constructed from durable steel and aluminium, COBALT8 includes a 37-note FATAR keybed that supports channel aftertouch for expressive playability. The instrument provides direct tactile access to parameters through 29 endless encoders, 24 performance buttons, and a 4-axis joystick assignable to various modulation destinations. Performance modes include mono, poly, multiple unison and stacked voice modes, with options such as portamento, chord inversion, sustain latch, and glide. Integrated Studio-Grade FX Engine Three independent FX slots provide access to 26 stereo FX algorithms designed to enhance patches with depth, warmth, and character. These include reverbs, delays (standard, ping-pong, crossover), choruses, phasers, flangers, tremolo, rotary speaker emulation, LoFi, EQ and compressor effects. FX presets can be stored and recalled for streamlined live or studio performance setups. Extensive Connectivity and Control COBALT8 interfaces seamlessly with studio and live setups via class-compliant MIDI over USB, 5-pin DIN MIDI in/out, 6.35mm line and headphone outputs, and a stereo audio input. Analogue sync I/O via 3.5mm jacks facilitates integration with modular and groovebox systems. Sustain and expression pedal inputs expand performance dynamics, while poly-chaining two units doubles polyphony to 16 voices and 128 oscillators. Patch and Performance Memory Users can store up to 500 patches, with 300 factory presets crafted by professional sound designers. COBALT8 also includes 100 sequencer patterns and 100 FX configurations, all user-editable. Eight quick recall slots on the front panel allow instant access to preferred sounds during performance or production. MODALapp Integration The free MODALapp software, available for macOS, Windows, iOS, iPadOS and Android, as well as VST3 and AU plugin formats, enables deep visual editing of all sound parameters. Users can organise, backup, and tweak patches and sequences with a modern, intuitive interface, seamlessly integrating COBALT8 into any DAW workflow.
