Moldavite is a rare green natural glass known as a tektite, formed about 15 million years ago. It was created when a meteorite struck the Earth in what is now the Nördlinger Ries c rater (Germany). The impact melted surrounding rock and ejected it into the atmosphere, where it cooled extremely quickly while falling back to Earth, forming Moldavite. It is not a mineral or crystal, but an amorphous impact glass, which is why it has no crystal structure and often shows a rough, etched, or sculpted surface.
