Mommessin Volnay is a Burgundy red wine made from Pinot Noir under the Volnay AOC, bottled at approximately 13% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Quick Facts: ABV: ~13% | Origin: Volnay, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France | Appellation: Volnay AOC | Grape: Pinot Noir | Producer: Mommessin (est. 1865) Production & Heritage Mommessin was established in 1865 and has operated for over a century and a half as a Burgundy négociant, sourcing and vinifying wines from across the region's most notable appellations. Volnay AOC regulations mandate that wines be produced predominantly from Pinot Noir, grown on the limestone and marl slopes of the Côte de Beaune. The appellation sits at elevations between roughly 230 and 280 meters, and its south-southeast-facing vineyards contribute to the elegant, perfumed character that distinguishes Volnay from its neighbors. Mommessin's négociant model allows the house to select fruit from established vineyard parcels within the commune. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with fresh red cherry and mixed berry aromatics, layered with subtle oak influence. A light floral lift and gentle spice emerge as the wine breathes. Taste: On the palate, cherry fruit dominates the entry, supported by flavors of licorice and a cool hint of mint at the mid-palate. The structure is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins typical of the Volnay appellation, emphasizing finesse over power. Finish: The finish carries moderate length with lingering red fruit and a lightly mineral, earthy quality. A subtle tannic grip provides shape without heaviness. How to Drink Mommessin Volnay Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally around 15–16°C (59–61°F), in a wide-bowled Burgundy glass to allow the delicate aromatics to develop. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help soften any initial oak-driven astringency. This is primarily a wine for the table — a Coq au Vin showcases its Burgundian roots, a roast duck with cherry sauce mirrors the wine's fruit character, and mushroom risotto complements its earthy, savory undertones.
