4.5 x 5.5 Postcards On June 18, 1964, in St. Augustine, Florida, civil rights activists staged a “swim-in” at the segregated Monson Motor Lodge to protest the hotel’s whites-only p olicy. Black demonstrators, joined by two white allies, climbed into the motel’s pool as an act of peaceful resistance. In a now-infamous scene, the motel manager, James Brock, poured muriatic acid into the water in an attempt to drive them out, while police arrested the protesters still standing in the pool. Photographs of the shocking incident spread worldwide, capturing the brutality of segregation just days before the passage of the Civil Rights Act, and helping galvanize public support for the movement.
