This sculpture is inspired by Chac Mool, a Mayan statue at Chichen Itza. It represents fear of death and is usually positioned in front of a long tunnel symbolizing the journey int o the after life. The figure is lying down and is reminiscent of a lounge chair. The contrast of a fearful figure reclining is disquieting but also comforting. I had this idea over 15 years ago and have seen other artists explore this idea since then. As I have begun to make art, I started at the beginning in terms of images that impress me. Since I was a child I have been highly influenced by Mayan architecture and art. I want to experiment more with surface finish to continue the idea of 'ancient meets present.'
