Cézanne, originally from Aix-en-Provence, neighboring Sainte-Victoire, spent 40 years of his life immortalizing the mountain, which appears in 87 of his artworks. This painting, wi th its striking and unexpected colors, is considered a precursor to Cubism, influencing artists such as Picasso and Braque. Originally sold by Cézanne to the renowned gallery owner Ambroise Vollard, it passed through the hands of the greatest collectors in the history of art.
