Moonshadow Euonymus (Euonymus fortunei 'Moonshadow')Moonshadow Euonymus is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its bright gold-centered foliage, green margins, and dependable year-round color. Its variegated leaves bring a clean, cheerful look to foundation beds, borders, containers, low hedges, and small garden spaces. The dense, spreading habit makes it useful where a low evergreen accent is needed without overwhelming nearby plants. With full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and occasional trimming, Moonshadow Euonymus provides polished foliage contrast and easy structure through much of the year.Distinctive FeaturesMoonshadow Euonymus forms a dense, low-growing evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub with small rounded leaves that feature golden yellow centers and dark green margins. New foliage often shows the strongest yellow color, while older leaves may soften to creamy yellow for a layered variegated effect. The plant has a mounding to spreading habit and can root where stems touch the ground if allowed to grow unchecked. Flowers are small and not ornamental, so the main landscape value comes from its bright foliage, compact form, and year-round structure.Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light supporting strong variegation and a dense habit. Soil: Adapts to average, well-drained soil and performs best where roots are not kept in constantly wet conditions. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to keep foliage healthy and full. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8, with winter appearance varying by exposure and climate. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 1 to 2 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide with age, depending on pruning and site conditions. Habit: Forms a compact, dense, mounding to spreading evergreen shrub with a low, rounded outline. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a bright variegated foliage focal point in containers, foundation beds, entry plantings, border fronts, or small garden spaces where year-round color is needed. Groundcover: Plant in managed beds or slopes where a low spreading evergreen can provide coverage and bright foliage contrast. Foundation Planting: Use near foundations where a low evergreen shrub can add structure and color without blocking windows or overwhelming the planting. Low Hedge: Plant in a short row to create a colorful evergreen edge along walkways, patios, drive edges, or garden borders. Container Planting: Grow in decorative pots where its compact habit and gold-centered foliage can brighten patios, porches, and entryways. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed. Mulching: Apply a light mulch layer around the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the stems. Pruning: Prune lightly as needed to maintain shape, remove stray stems, or keep the plant compact and tidy. Reversion Control: Remove any solid green shoots promptly so the gold variegation remains the dominant feature. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth. Deer Protection: Deer may browse this plant in some landscapes, so young plants may need protection where browsing pressure is heavy. Why Choose Moonshadow Euonymus? Gold-Centered Foliage: Displays bright yellow to creamy yellow leaf centers with dark green margins for strong foliage contrast. Compact Habit: Stays low and dense, making it useful in small beds, containers, edging, and foundation plantings.
