Moraea polyanthos seeds grow into the many-flowered Moraea — a cormous geophyte native to the subtropical biome of the south-western Cape Province of South Africa. Described by Linnaeus filius (L.f.) in Supplementum Plantarum (1782). The epithet polyanthos means 'many-flowered', referring to the multiple flowers produced per stem or per plant — unusual in a genus where many species produce only one or two flowers per stem. Produces iris-like flowers in shades of mauve to lilac-blue in the Cape spring. The genus Moraea was named after Robert More (1703–1780), English botanist, by Philip Miller (1758).
