Moreux Les Bouffants Sancerre is a 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley's Sancerre appellation, bottled at approximately 13–14% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Sourced from an extremely steep, limestone-rich parcel adjacent to the celebrated Les Damnés vineyard in Chavignol, this single-vineyard bottling delivers pronounced minerality and aromatic intensity. The 2017 vintage earned 89 points from Roger Voss at Wine Enthusiast, who praised its tight mineral structure and aging potential.Quick Facts: ABV: ~13–14% | Origin: Sancerre, Loire Valley, France | Style: Dry White, Single Vineyard | Producer: Domaine Roger & Christophe Moreux, ChavignolProduction & HeritageDomaine Roger & Christophe Moreux is a family estate rooted in Chavignol, with a winemaking lineage dating back to the 16th century. The Les Bouffants parcel sits on a tiny, very steep hillside dense with limestone and rock, positioned directly beside Les Damnés — widely regarded as the "Grand Cru" of Chavignol. After harvest, the grapes are pressed and the juice is allowed to settle before fermenting in stainless steel vats, where it remains for six to eight months before light filtration and bottling. This restrained, non-oak approach preserves the grape's varietal purity and allows the vineyard's chalky terroir to speak clearly in the finished wine.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with delicate citrus blossom and fresh melon before revealing deeper layers of fig and subtle floral notes. A flinty, stony undercurrent runs beneath the fruit, signaling the wine's limestone origins.Taste: The entry is round and juicy, with ripe apple and pear fruit meeting brighter citrus tones on the mid-palate. Passion fruit and melon broaden the flavor spectrum, while a pronounced mineral backbone — chalky and taut — keeps everything in sharp focus. The structure is surprisingly full for Sancerre, with lively acidity providing lift throughout.Finish: Crisp and invigorating, the finish carries lingering notes of citrus zest and wet stone. The mineral thread persists, leaving a clean, refreshing impression that invites the next sip.How to Drink Les BouffantsServe chilled to around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to appreciate the full aromatic range; the wine rewards careful attention neat in a proper white wine glass. A Spritz Blanc — replacing Prosecco with this Sancerre alongside Aperol and soda — takes advantage of its bright acidity and citrus character. A classic French 75, substituting this wine for Champagne, pairs its minerality beautifully with gin and lemon. For a simple warm-weather pour, a Sancerre Highball with premium tonic and a grapefruit twist lets the wine's natural aromatics and structure shine through.Best For Hosting a seafood dinner where the wine's minerality complements oysters, ceviche, or grilled fish Gifting a Loire Valley enthusiast or someone exploring French terroir-driven whites Spring and summer entertaining where a crisp, aromatic white anchors the table Building a cellar of age-worthy Sancerre — Roger Voss noted the 2017's potential for development Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Les Bouffants taste like? It delivers ripe apple, pear, and passion fruit layered over a pronounced chalky mineral backbone, with bright citrus acidity and a crisp, refreshing finish. The overall impression is full-bodied for Sancerre yet tightly structured. How does Les Bouffants compare to Pouilly-Fumé? Both appellations sit on opposite banks of the Loire and produce aromatic, acid-driven Sauvignon Blanc from similar soils — even experts acknowledge the difficulty of distinguishing them blind. Les Bouffants leans into steep Chavignol limestone for a particularly mineral-forward profile, whereas many Pouilly-Fumé expressions tend to emphasize a smoky, gunflint character from their own Kimmeridgian clay and silex soils. Is Les Bouffants good for sipping on its own? Absolutely — the wine's aromatic complexity, balanced acidity, and mineral depth make it an engaging standalone pour, best served well chilled in a tulip-shaped glass.Where is Les Bouffants made? It is produced by Domaine Roger & Christophe Moreux in the village of Chavignol within the Sancerre appellation of the Loire Valley, France. The specific vineyard parcel is a steep, rocky hillside adjacent to the renowned Les Damnés site. What foods pair well with Les Bouffants? Fresh oysters and shellfish complement the wine's salinity and mineral edge. Crottin de Chavignol — the local goat cheese — is a classic regional pairing that echoes the terroir. Grilled white fish with herbs lets the citrus and melon notes mirror the dish. Light salads with goat cheese and citrus vinaigrette align with the wine's acidity. Sushi and sashimi also work well, as the crisp finish cleanses the palate between bites. What sizes does Les Bouffants come in? Les Bouffants is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle format. Is Les Bouffants worth the price? It positions as a mid-range Sancerre that punches above its weight thanks to the single-vineyard provenance and proximity to Chavignol's most prestigious parcels. For a site-specific expression from a multi-generational family estate, it represents strong value within the appellation. Why Les Bouffants? What separates this wine from the broader Sancerre field is its vineyard address. The Les Bouffants parcel sits on one of Chavignol's steepest, stoniest slopes, immediately beside Les Damnés — a site many consider Sancerre's finest. That extreme limestone concentration translates directly into the wine's taut mineral backbone, a quality that distinguishes it from softer, more fruit-forward bottlings across the appellation. Combined with the Moreux family's centuries-long tenure in Chavignol and their deliberately hands-off stainless steel vinification, the result is a transparent window into one of the Loire Valley's most compelling terroirs.
