Morlanda Priorat Crianza is a Garnacha and Cariñena blend from Spain's prestigious Priorat DOQ, bottled at approximately 14.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Awarded 90 points by Wine Spectator and a Platinum medal at the Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition, this red delivers the concentration and mineral intensity that have made Priorat one of Spain's most revered appellations. Quick Facts: ABV: ~14.5% | Origin: Priorat DOQ, Spain | Crianza | Producer: Celler Morlanda (Viticultors del Priorat) Production & Heritage Celler Morlanda was founded in 1997 in the village of Bellmunt del Priorat, at the heart of one of only two DOQ-classified wine regions in Spain. The vines grow on llicorella — ancient Quaternary slate soils unique to Priorat — at extremely low yields of under 1.25 tons per acre, well below the already strict regional norms. The Crianza undergoes 12 months of aging in French oak barrels followed by additional bottle aging, a regimen that integrates oak character without overwhelming the wine's terroir-driven minerality. The blend centers on Garnacha and Cariñena, the region's signature grapes, with a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon in some vintages. Tasting Notes Aroma: Ripe black fruit — blackberry, plum, fig — rises first, followed by darker, more brooding layers of liquorice, cocoa, and tobacco. Cedar, pepper, and toasty oak emerge as the wine opens in the glass. Taste: The entry is rich and concentrated, built around ripe dark fruit and a core of pronounced minerality drawn directly from the slate soils. Mid-palate, flavors of toast, dried cherry, and dark chocolate expand across well-structured yet surprisingly soft tannins. A floral note and warm spice add complexity as the wine hits its stride. Finish: Long and powerful, with fine-grained tannins carrying lingering notes of blackberry, cedar, and slate minerality. The finish sustains its intensity without heaviness, suggesting considerable aging potential. How to Drink Morlanda Crianza Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F) and allow 30 to 60 minutes of decanting to fully reveal its aromatic complexity. This is a wine built for the table and rewards a straightforward pour into a large-bowled glass. A Tempranillo-based Sangria gains serious depth when Morlanda replaces a simpler red, thanks to its concentrated fruit. A classic Kalimotxo takes on unexpected sophistication with this wine's dark fruit and minerality. For warm-weather gatherings, a red wine spritzer using the Crianza alongside citrus and sparkling water showcases its berry and floral character. Best For Exploring Priorat DOQ wines without the ultra-premium price of entry Pairing with slow-braised lamb or grilled red meats on a weekend dinner Gifting a Spanish wine enthusiast who appreciates terroir-driven reds Building a cellar with age-worthy wines from lesser-known producers Frequently Asked Questions What does Morlanda Crianza taste like? Morlanda Crianza is rich and concentrated, dominated by ripe blackberry and plum flavors layered with cocoa, cedar, and a pronounced slate minerality. The tannins are fine and soft, and the finish is long and powerful. How does Morlanda Crianza compare to Álvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat? Both are Priorat DOQ reds blending Garnacha and Cariñena, but Morlanda Crianza receives 12 months in French oak and tends toward a more concentrated, mineral-forward profile from extremely low-yielding vines. Camins del Priorat is generally positioned as a more accessible, fruit-forward introduction to the region. Is Morlanda Crianza good for sipping on its own? Yes — its balanced structure, soft tannins, and complex aromatics make it an excellent wine for drinking neat, especially after 30 to 60 minutes of decanting to let the bouquet develop fully. Where is Morlanda Crianza made? Morlanda Crianza is produced by Celler Morlanda (Viticultors del Priorat), located in Bellmunt del Priorat within Spain's Priorat DOQ, a mountainous region in Catalonia known for its ancient llicorella slate soils. What foods pair well with Morlanda Crianza? Slow-roasted lamb shoulder complements the wine's dark fruit and cedar oak notes. Grilled chorizo echoes its spice and smoky undertones. Aged Manchego cheese mirrors the wine's intensity without competing with its tannins. Dark chocolate desserts align with the cocoa and fig aromatics. Braised oxtail or short ribs match the wine's weight and structure. What sizes does Morlanda Crianza come in? Morlanda Priorat Crianza is primarily available in the standard 750ml bottle format. Is Morlanda Crianza worth the price? Morlanda Crianza positions as a mid-tier Priorat DOQ wine, offering the region's hallmark concentration and minerality at a fraction of the cost of top-flight Priorat bottlings. With 90 points from Wine Spectator and a Platinum medal at the Winemaker Challenge, it represents strong value within its category. Why Morlanda Crianza? Priorat DOQ remains one of Spain's most exclusive wine designations, and Morlanda Crianza delivers its defining characteristics — llicorella-driven minerality, low-yield concentration, and structured aging — at an accessible tier. The 90-point Wine Spectator rating and Platinum medal from the Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition confirm that this is not a wine trading on appellation prestige alone. Twelve months in French oak and rigorous vine management at under 1.25 tons per acre produce a red with genuine depth and cellaring potential. For anyone seeking an authentic Priorat expression without the rarity-driven pricing of the region's flagship estates, Morlanda Crianza is a serious and rewarding choice.
