This carpet was knotted in a Moroccan city workshop, to order, in the medallion tradition of formal urban weaving. The field is a deep teal, dense enough to hold its own against th e medallion sitting on top of it - a large red lozenge, hooked and layered like an emblem, repeated smaller at both ends. Zigzag bands in ochre and aubergine run beneath it, and the whole piece is boxed in by a wide, multi-striped border, each band a different pattern, none of them accidental. This is a formal room piece, built to be read from across it. One of a kind - a carpet with its own history, arriving exactly as it is.
