Someone looked at the natural world and realized it had been tiling itself all along.Byzantine artisans understood this instinctively. Their mosaic work — thousands of hand-cut tesserae pressed into plaster across the domes of Ravenna and Constantinople — drew as much from the organic world as from the geometric. Leaves, vines, and branching forms appeared alongside saints and emperors, rendered in glass and stone with a brilliance that hasn't faded in fifteen hundred years.
