A series regulator controls charging voltage by intermittently disconnecting the stator coils rather than dumping surplus current as heat, which is how a conventional shunt unit works. The practical result is that a series regulator runs considerably cooler than both shunt and MOSFET voltage regulator rectifiers, and less heat in the unit means less stress on the stator feeding it. The kit includes a bypass harness that connects the regulator directly to the battery, taking the charging current out of the original chassis wiring and its ageing junctions. An alternative connector is supplied as well, for use where the original plug has corroded or been damaged by heat. A healthy charging system holds at least 14.5 V at the battery with the engine running. Below that the battery will slowly discharge and the bike may eventually refuse to start. A reading well over 15 V indicates the regulator has lost control and is overcharging, which will damage the battery. Discoloured or melted regulator connectors are another clear sign.
