"Mothering" Etosha National Park, Namibia Photographer: Graham Elliott It’s always nice to see very young animals and this giraffe only looked to be a few weeks old. When born, they have to be tall enough to be able to feed from their mother, Naturally, they are very vulnerable to predators, so they will always stay close to their mother. The weaning period for female calves is 12-16 months, and for males, 12 – 14. I visited Etosha in September for this photograph, and many animals were either pregnant or had recently given birth. This will coincide with the rainy season when food is abundant. Unfortunately, there has been a drought in Namibia for the past two years, so many of the young might not survive.
