Mott Street, the oldest street in Chinatown, is known for its iconic Chinese street signs. Starting in 1969, Chinese-language signs began appearing to accommodate a new wave of imm igration. Handwritten calligraphy eventually became the style for these signs as Chinatown expanded throughout the 1980s. Mott Street is one of the historic streets that has grown alongside Chinatown’s development. Today, many bilingual signs are being replaced by English-only versions, but efforts are underway to preserve Chinatown’s heritage.
