Thick grey cloud covered the mountains, the light lacked contrast, and it felt increasingly unlikely that I'd come home with an image worth printing.Then I noticed the clouds.They were racing across the face of Mount Temple, constantly revealing and concealing the summit. One moment the mountain stood proudly against the sky; the next it disappeared completely into the mist.I pulled into a roadside viewpoint and waited.With my camera held firmly to my eye, I followed the mountain through the viewfinder, watching for the instant when cloud and rock would come together exactly as I had imagined. There were several close calls. My arms began to ache from holding the camera ready. More than once I lowered it, only to raise it again seconds later.Eventually, the mountain revealed itself.Wrapped in a soft embrace of cloud, Mount Temple appeared for only a moment before disappearing once more. The subdued light that had frustrated me all afternoon suddenly became its greatest strength. Converting the image to black and white allowed every texture, every shadow and every movement within the clouds to tell the story.Behind the LensThis photograph taught me one of the most valuable lessons I've learned as a landscape photographer.It's easy to believe a day has been wasted when the weather refuses to cooperate.
