While many of us may be familiar with large, rich English walnuts sold in grocery stores, perhaps we are not as familiar with black walnuts, which are smaller, harder, and more pungent. While the meaty internal kernels have been used as food for hundreds of years, the outer green hulls of black walnut have been equally employed for their healthful properties in traditional folk herbalism. Juglans nigra is a large, deciduous tree native to eastern North America and cultivated throughout Europe. A member of the Juglandaceae family, black walnut thrives in riparian ecosystems. The stately tree has pinnate leaves and produces numerous green fruits that slowly ripen to yellow. Long-lived, black walnut produces chemicals that it releases from its roots that keep other plants from growing beneath it, giving the tree more nutrients for itself and less competition. Traditionally, the hulls are picked while still green and utilized for their wellness-supporting properties. For centuries, black walnut has been a source of food and wellness support for indigenous populations. Astringent and tannic, black walnut hull can be infused, tinctured, encapsulated, or used as a dye for fabrics. In traditional healing practices, black walnut was often used internally as well as externally in topical applications. It is used in many of the same ways by modern herbalists today. Black walnut tincture may be one of the most ideal ways for receiving all the benefits of this long-used botanical. Our black walnut tincture is handmade in small batches by our expert extract team. Wildcrafted fresh green hulls are macerated in organic alcohol and water for two months before being strained and rigorously tested in our lab.
