‘Mountaineer White Half Runner’ is a traditional Southern half-runner bean prized for its dependable production, sweet flavor, and versatile harvests. Semi-vining plants produce abundant crops of tender green pods filled with white seeds and offer more climbing growth than a typical bush bean without reaching the size of a full pole variety. Sow ‘Mountaineer White Half Runner’ directly in the garden about 1 inch deep after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants 3 to 4 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 18 to 24 inches tall with vines spreading 3 to 5 feet. Staking or light support can help keep the semi-vining growth organized and make harvesting easier, but it is not required. Ready to harvest in about 60 days, begin picking the 4- to 4½-inch pods while they are young and tender for snap beans. Allow the seeds to develop further for fresh shell beans, or leave the pods on the plants until fully mature and dry for storage. Sweet, tender, and versatile, ‘Mountaineer White Half Runner’ is excellent for fresh eating, cooking, canning, freezing, shelling, and drying.
