MUGG 009 - Japan Netsuke (19th century)Netsuke were carved to function as toggles, securing tobacco pouches or medicine containers to the sash of a kimono that had no pockets. In Edo-period Japan they became portable declarations of taste and means, legible markers of status in a culture without branded goods, closer in social function to a signet ring than to an ornament.Wood inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl at this scale, roughly 3.5 centimetres tall, required tools closer to a surgeon's than a sculptor's. The acquisition was made with the guidance of @sarrastavrides and @bamboograssfield, friends and patrons of the institution.
