The series ended abruptly when stone dust aggravated the tuberculosis that would kill him seven years later, at thirty-five.The elongated oval and flattened nose owe more to Baule and Fang carvings Modigliani studied at the Musée d'Ethnographie du Trocadéro than to any European sculptural tradition, a debt he acknowledged openly while Brancusi, working nearby, denied similar influences. The 68.3-centimetre limestone original weighed thirty-four kilograms; the work has since been preserved in ceramic form by MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff.
