Caleche #1087, rendered in pen and black ink with watercolor, gouache, and gum arabic, is one of several hundred surviving production drawings from the firm, each functioning less as illustration than as binding contract between maker and buyer.The gum arabic glaze on the body panels mimics the lacquer finish the client would have received, a material echo that collapses the distance between drawing and object. The original sheet remains in the drawings and prints collection at @metmuseum. MUGGMUSEET curatorial staff have preserved the work in ceramic form, where the lacquer-surrogate now occupies a third material context.
