A four inch bundle of dried mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris. Seven dollars. Mugwort is the dream herb and it has been for a long time. It turns up as a traveler's herb in the old Europ ean material, worn or carried against tiredness on the road, and it was one of the gruit herbs that bittered beer before hops displaced them, which happened gradually and at different times in different places, as late as the sixteenth century in England. In Chinese medicine a close relative, Artemisia argyi, is what moxibustion burns. Almost everywhere it grows, somebody has used it to get at something the waking mind is not offering. It does a different job from white sage. Sage is a reset; it clears everything, including things you might have wanted to keep. Mugwort is finer. It sharpens rather than empties, which is why it belongs before divination, before dream work, before you sit down with a deck rather than after an argument. The smoke is green and slightly bitter and does not smell like much else. People either love it immediately or find it a bit medicinal. Good to Know 4 inch bundle. Burn in a heatproof dish and never leave it unattended. Not to be used in pregnancy: mugwort has a long history as an abortifacient and there is evidence it stimulates uterine activity.
