Great Mullein, a member of the figwort family, hails from Eurasia but has found a home in North America and Australia through naturalization. Its soft, velvety leaves have earned i t the names Velvet Dock or Velvet Plant. Historically, the plant earned another moniker, Candlestick, as ancient Romans crafted torches by dipping its lengthy flower stems in tallow and igniting them.
