Sometimes before I start a new piece I start by exploring colors and textures and the overall "feeling" to be found in landscapes and the earth's unexplored terrains. I'll take a Pinterest free-fall into a theme and see where it takes me. I'll start playing with my paints, pulling in colors in acrylic, oils, and ink and finding a theme. I then sit with my stones laid out before me and start to create a color palette in my precious stones. Sapphires are my current muse - in particular those in subterranean hues of teal, turquoise, and aquatic blues... I wanted this piece to have a coolness to it, but with that peaceful and uplifting feeling of being just beneath the surface of the ocean, looking up through the water, so calm and tranquil in that muted surrounding, but with the sun pouring through and all the promise of life above trickling through.
