'Mutual Accommodation', 1860. This cartoon illustrates the argument taking place between France, represented here by Madame La Banque on the left, and Britain in the shape of the O ld Lady of Threadneedle Street on the right. It appears that France had been engaged in creating an artificial run on British gold reserves. Eventually, though, a 'mutual accommodation' was reached whereby Britain made a loan of £2m in gold upon receiving a deposit of the same sum in silver from France.
