My art is a tribute to the power of storytelling and its ability to shape our perceptions, challenge preconceptions, and connect us on a profound level. The story of Margaret Garner who felt it necessary to take the life of her daughter rather than let her go back to slavery has always resonated with me. This lasting impression of this mother’s decision made me think deeply about my ancestry, as well as how I move about life as a mother to my daughter. How do I show up for her? How do I protect her? When should she have autonomy in her own decision making? Is my parenting enough? Am I doing a good job?
