My Paris is Paris as Charlotte knew it, built from her own photographs of the city she lived in. Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. Nothing here is solid. The Eiffel Tower stands in the middle of the frame and the sky comes through it, clouds, branches and kisses crossing the iron. One photograph does most of the work. Charlotte took it from the Trocadéro esplanade, and it gives the artwork three things: the Eiffel Tower itself, the people standing on the esplanade, and the paving under their feet. The people end up high in the frame and around the base of the tower, far bigger than anything else, pale enough that you can miss them the first time. The paving ends up in the Seine, its tiles running into the water. Along the bottom the city holds. The Pont Notre-Dame crosses the river, and behind it the Conciergerie with its conical towers, where Marie-Antoinette was held before her execution. Above its roofline there are street lamps, from the same photograph as the branches. They take a while to find. The sky is branches and handwriting. Pages from old manuscripts run in cursive across the clouds, blue ink over blue. The kisses come from Oscar Wilde's grave at Père-Lachaise. Charlotte scattered them through the sky for the love she found in Paris and for the people she loves there still. The Eiffel Tower, the bridge and the grave are in three different parts of Paris. What stayed was never one view. It was the years: history under everything, monuments she saw every day, and the life that filled them. The artwork is faded because that is how it comes back.
