Kamala comes from the Mallotus philippensis, a shrub native to India that is sometimes called the monkey face tree. The dye produces warm golden yellows when used with alum mordant . Kamala is less soluble then some other dyes so to extract it more efficiently us alcohol (vodka) or water with 1% soda ash added to it.
