π Arches National Park, Utah The sandstone here has been working on this for a hundred million years. You can see it in the layers, compressed and lifted and carved into something no architect would have the patience to imagine. Standing beneath the arch and looking up, the sky becomes the subject, and the earth becomes the frame, and for a moment, the whole relationship between the two quietly inverts. Positioned directly below, lens pointed at the sky, and let the rock do what it has always done. The clouds moved through on their own schedule. The light caught the west face of the left column and left the right in cooler shadow. The striations ran in long horizontal lines that remembered when all of this was the floor of a sea. The world has been building this image since before there were eyes to see it.
