Once this occurs, messages are sent to the diaphragm to strongly press downward on the stomach, for the top of the stomach and esophagus to relax, and for the lower valve of the stomach that connects it to the rest of the intestine to strongly close. This acts like a device to extract food forcibly out of the stomach, up through the mouth, and out of the body. The brain also send messages, at the same time, to close off the valve to the windpipe so that food is not at risk of entering the lungs and causing suffocation.
