This piece was meant to reflect my percussion days at the Eastman School of Music, where many of the percussionists played drum set in addition to classical percussion. Since Eastman was also the home of Steve Gadd, future generations of percussionists were influenced by his work in rudimental drumming – especially as applied to the drum set. As a reflection of what I remember hearing in the practice rooms of the 5th floor annex (which housed many of the percussionist studios), I decided to create a quartet consisting of snare drum and bass drum in pairs. The particular setup employed (stereo pairing) allows for unique listening experiences involving: rhythms that pass from one player to another, snare drum rolls that explode into accents, solo lines distributed among instruments as well as unison lines that are shared by each section.
