The Nelson Ball Tripod Lamp (1952) has a round, ribbed shade that looks like a delicate origami sculpture. But this translucent cover, an engineering marvel made via a technique Nelson pioneered for his Bubble Lamp, was inspired by the process the Navy used to mothball ships.
