Staying hydrated is also crucial, as fluids aid in transporting these vital minerals throughout the body. The most significant electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonate. When these electrolytes become imbalanced, whether due to excessive loss, inadequate intake, or other medical conditions, it can disrupt normal bodily functions, leading to symptoms such as muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion. In severe cases, these imbalances can result in life-threatening complications, including cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and even organ failure. Monitoring and addressing electrolyte levels to maintain overall health and prevent serious medical issues is crucial. Sodium is a crucial extracellular electrolyte for maintaining fluid volume and regulating cell-membrane potential. Hyponatremia occurs when serum sodium drops below 135 mmol/L, causing headaches, confusion, nausea, and delirium. With sodium levels above 145 mmol/L, hypernatremia leads to rapid breathing, sleep disturbances, and restlessness. Potassium is an essential intracellular ion regulated by the sodium–potassium pump and affected by aldosterone in the kidneys. Hypomagnesemia (magnesium levels < 1.46 mg/dL) can result from alcohol use, GI issues, or kidney loss and may cause ventricular arrhythmias.
