The vivid, light and breezy atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast appealed to the artist’s bold palette and gestural brushwork, traits rooted in the tenets of the Fauve movement of which he was a pioneer. In the present work, Dufy applies this style to a lively interior filled with beautiful patterns, juxtaposed against a calm expanse of coastline through the open windows. Over the course of many summers in Nice, Dufy painted a series of similar compositions, one of which is at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. A guéridon is a small table supported by one or more columns, or sculptural human or mythological figures, often with a circular top.
