It’s one of the best natural fuels for small-beaked birds like goldfinches, siskins, redpolls, and greenfinches — giving them the energy they need to sing, flit and feed all year round. We don’t grow Niger Seed here on the farm (it needs tropical sunshine rather than Herefordshire drizzle!), but we source responsibly from trusted growers in Ethiopia and India where it’s grown as a food and oil crop. Suitable Feeder: Due to its fine nature, niger seed is best used in specialised niger seed feeders rather than conventional feeders (usually bright yellow and with much smaller holes sot that the seed doesn’t all fall out). Making Compost Teas: We use nutrient-rich compost teas to naturally feed our crops and improve soil health. Mob Grazing Cattle: Implementing mob grazing techniques mimics natural grazing patterns, improving soil health and plant diversity. Planting Cover Crops: These crops protect and nourish the soil, prevent erosion, and enhance biodiversity. Stopping the Use of Our Plough: Reducing soil disturbance helps maintain soil integrity and supports a thriving ecosystem. By growing and processing our birdseed on-site, we reduce our carbon footprint and ensure the highest quality product. Thanks to these efforts, a BTO survey identified 49 species of birds on our farm—an amazing result that shows the positive impact of our practices.
