Night Dance — Brock Chart Night Dance is a gentle, lyrical duet written for an elementary student who wanted a “pretty piece.” At the time, this student was very early in lessons and we were focusing on black-key groupings. It was a fun challenge to write something that a beginner can learn by rote, but that still sounds like a real “grown-up” piece to them. When introducing Night Dance, I like to talk about question-and-answer phrases in music. It’s a great excuse to practice active listening, explore simple compositional techniques, and help students learn to come in at the right time. The primo part stays comfortable and pattern-based, while the teacher’s secondo part provides a warm, classical-style accompaniment that makes the whole duet feel expressive and special. 🎵 About this piece: Level: Elementary Style: Classical-style Duet Format: Student/Teacher Duet Pedagogical focus: Rote learning, black-key groupings, phrase shaping, listening for cues Exploration: Use this piece to talk about question-and-answer phrases and have students create their own “answers” at the keyboard.
