"Hunters, trappers, and fishermen who have had a traditional relationship with the land speak clearly about the impact of unsustainable human activity that threaten ecosystems and species. Exploitation of our territories is a real concern for all of us. I wanted to paint a reminder of what's important to me - fighting for a better relationship with the land and for the majestic creatures that call it home." -Mike Alexander is an emerging Anishinaabe artist originally from Swan Lake First Nation in Treaty #1 territory, who lives on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. His spiritual name is Animikianikwad, or Thundercloud Man. A member of the Crane Clan, Mike's art serves to communicate stories and teachings of the Ojibway people
