Silver gelatin photograph from the series ‘Nijinsky and the Ecstasy of the Divine’, a collaboration with dance artist Aleix Martinez. A medium format camera was used with silver gelatin negative film. This photograph was inspired by a visit made to Nijinsky at the Asylum some 10 years after he was first committed. A former dancer and journalist came to visit him - he was unresponsive, slumped in a chair - "Mr Nijinsky, won't you give us one of your famous leaps?". Nijinsky stood up, leapt directly upwards in the air, then sat down and resumed his former state of unreachability. The journalist had a small camera and in that one fleeting instant had the wit to make a quick picture. This image is a reference to that moment, to that picture. What I love about this photograph is that it's not quite clear which way his feet are facing and if you look closely you can see light streaming behind his legs, as is directly plugged into the energy of the universe...
